| The Diaconate of Saint Andrews Presbyterian Church chose to support this project as our response to the needs of the people impacted by Hurricane Katrina. The congregation of First Presbyterian Church has many needs, as most of the people in this area did not have flood insurance. The project is well organized. Food, housing, baths, and laundry facilities are provided at Camp Hope. There is no cost for this trip except for transportation to and from Gulfport. Also, this Mission Trip is very flexible, as one or more persons can go any time space is available at Camp Hope. The project organizers want volunteers to commit to working Monday through Friday, but they will accept shorter stays.
Please read the "General Information for Volunteers for First Presbyterian Church of Gulfport, MS." This document has been provided by the project organizers to assist volunteers. This document explains the project and answers most of your questions.
Currently, Saint Andrews Presbyterian Church has reserved 18 spaces at Camp Hope for March 4th through the 11th. This week was selected since only three spaces had been reserved at Camp Hope for this week and Camp Hope was fillling up prior to this week. Therefore, Saint Andrews Presbyterian Church has the opportunity to send more than 18 people on this Mission Trip.
At this project there is a need for home construction workers, skilled and unskilled, as well as a need for people to work at Camp Hope preparing food for the relief workers. Youth must be at least 15 years of age to go on this trip. Almost everyone can help in this effort.
The owners of the homes that the volunteers have been working on are invited to participate in the Wednesday evening devotions at Camp Hope. Additionally, First Presbyterian Church invites all volunteers to join them in their Sunday Worship Service of Our Lord and Savoir. They are currently meeting in a local school.
While the General Information Document explains the project and provides a lot of information, there are a few additional things that you need to know if you are planning to go to Gulfport, Mississippi as follows:
- You must fill out the "Volunteer Information Form" and send it in. If you go with an organized group from Saint Andrews Presbyterian Church, everyone's form can be sent in at the same time.
- You must sign up for space in Camp Hope before you go as space is limited.
- You should have your own person health insurance as there is no insurance program for the relief workers on this trip. Each worker will be asked to sign a release form.
- Teams are responsible for picking up needed materials at local stores, so driving a couple of pickup trucks to Gulfport is recommended.
- From Irmo, SC it is approximately 620 miles to Gulfport, Mississippi. This will be about a 12 hour drive. Tor a typical trip, you would leave and arrive at Camp Hope on a Saturday, attend First Presbyterian Church's worship service on Sunday, work Monday through Friday, and drive home on Saturday.
Marion Sadler and Scott Faggart are the contact people for Saint Andrews Presbyterian church for our response. If you have any questions or want to join the March trip, please contact one of them. Their telephone numbers and email addresses are given on the previous page.
Please pray about your participation in this relief effort. |
