Our Response.   Saint Andrews Presbyterian Church has decided to participate in the Hurricane Katrina relief effort set up by Crossroads Presbyterian Church in Middletown, Delaware and being coordinated by the Heritage Presbytery. This relief effort is focused on helping the congregation of First Presbyterian Church in Gulfport Mississippi rebuild the homes of their members.  The webpage for this project is: www.thegulfportproject.com

The Damage. There were approximately 30 homes of church members whose homes were completely destroyed and another 50 church members with water damaged homes that can be restored. Also, First Presbyterian Church was badly damaged. The initial work effort focused on restoring the 50 homes. The work has been completed. Most of the owners of 30 homes that were completely destroyed are working with professional contractors to rebuild their homes or they have decided not to rebuild in Gulfport.

Currently, the Project is working on other homes in the Gulfport area. The work mainly consists of installing insulation, sheetrock, trim molding, and some demolition. The PowerPoint links at the bottom this page under the heading of "More Information" show some of the devastation.

Camp Hope.  A camp named Camp Hope was built for this project on property owned by First Presbyterian Church. Camp Hope can currently house approximately 56 people in campers, motor homes, and Sea Huts with bunk beds. If necessary, tents are available for overflow. Additional camper and motor home hookups (water, sewer, & electricity) are available for volunteer relief workers who bring their own campers or motor homes. Volunteer relief workers are provided shelter, bath and laundry facilities, and meals at Camp Hope.

It is estimated this project will last at least a year, as there is much to do to assist these people.  Volunteers from Saint Andrews Presbyterian Church will be going to Gulfport Mississippi periodically throughout 2006 and probably into 2007.
